Youth Can Do It !
In 2017, two high school students self-published a book about racial literacy. Seventeen-year-old Winona Guo and Priya Vulchi joined together to talk about race and share their love.
Before Priya and Winona started The Classroom Index, they started a website called Choose where they started telling their community's and race's stories online. This platform is currently where you can learn more about The Classroom Index. They founded Choose itself with the intention of participating in the debate and movement surrounding race, but in the early phases of development even their friends were dubious about the necessity of having such a conversation. In fact, Priya's friend challenged the veracity of the racism issue in their neighborhood, saying instead, "There is no racism in my lunch group.”
The Classroom Index, in contrast to other textbooks, combines the experiences of marginalized people with current cultural and historical events in an effort to make the discussion of racial literacy more interesting for students and teachers at Princeton High School (where both Priya and Winona are students). Their ultimate goal is for The Classroom Index to surpass all other social justice education resources in America.
